Days 1- 12 - Bogata, Columbia and Mexico City, Mexico Summaries

'The Americas' Challenge kicked off on Monday 8th September, with Gordon flying out to his first destination of the next challenge - Bogota, Columbia, before heading over to Mexico City, Mexico.

Searching around the cities and speaking to locals, it seems that the most vulnerable people in these cities are left without much support from the government, and with little funding for non-profit organisations to support its' cities most vulnerable people.

Main Observations

  • No matter what city, country or continent - the disparity and hopelessness for those on the streets remain the same. In Mexico City, it was devastating to witness a young girl who was sadly sitting in the middle of a main road self-harming. Unfortunately, this is a common occurence for many in attempt to escape their reality, but people like you and I can help and speak hope into their lives and direct them to the right resources/support for help.

  • The most vulnerable in these cities seem to be the forgotten. Left to their own devices in 'tolerated zones' in the city, where the police do not interfere, and they don't interfere with the surrounding areas, making it easy for them to become trapped in their hopelessness.

  • Both cities, as with many, had streets filled with prostitution, drug use and street crime - but to an extent that hadn't yet been experienced on the 'Giving the Vulnerable a Chance' Campaign

Reflections

  • Governments can't love people, only communities and individuals can do that. We all have a role to play in supporting/helping our communities most vulnerable people.

This challenge is about educating, inspiring and mobilising individuals to reach out to the vulnerable in their communities by raising awareness of the reality that vulnerable people face day-to-day by experiencing it first-hand and sharing back with you.

Remember - everyone has a story that has led them to their present day situation.

Be kind to the vulnerable and give them a chance.
